Maria Theresa Miranda-Custodio

Forty years in government service, albeit for the US government, and not for the Philippines (which has much need for talented and honest people).

Mary graduated from Angeles University in Pampanga with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, major in Banking and Finance. She was a working student doing bookkeeping work for the US Military Base in Capas, Tarlac. In 1977, she migrated to the United States and worked for the Department of Defence Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) as Supervisory Accounting Technician, and then moved to Japan in 1989, where she continued to work for the Navy MWR as Internal Auditor. The job required her to ensure that the operations of all the MWR Food and Beverage, Recreation, Entertainment Departments are within US General Accounting Practices. Mary’s career was basically with the US Navy, mostly with MWR. She spearheaded the opening of MWR Hotel in 1991 for the displaced sailors from the Philippines when Mt. Pinatubo erupted, hiring and training Japanese and US personnel for the hotel operations.

A chronological order of her various positions and responsibilities included being Club Manager at the Navy All Hands Club, the Chief Petty Officers Club and the Officers Club, employing/supervising 110-120 Japanese and US employees; Financial Administrator in Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan, including assisting in the Finance Section of MWRs in Diego Garcia, Korea, Singapore, and Okinawa.

She was Business Manager, in Rota, Spain, involved in closures of bases in Italy, UK and Iceland. From 2011-2014, she was back to Yokosuka as Financial Administrator, with responsibilities that included Atsugi, Okinawa, as well as MWR-related work for Korea, Singapore and Diego Garcia.

Mary’s last responsibilities for the US government prior to her full retirement in 2018, was as Management Support Analyst for MWR in San Diego, California, where she resides, and where she also supported MWR operations in Europe and Asia in their financial reports.
